What happens when your nervous system feels caught between running away and freezing in place? Lately, life has felt like I’m constantly buffering—trying to move forward while somehow going nowhere. Maybe progress doesn’t always mean pushing harder. Maybe sometimes it means taking our feet off both pedals and allowing ourselves to idle without needing to know what comes next.
As I grimaced through each painful step on a recent morning walk, I found myself wanting to separate from the pain — to focus on the beauty around me and leave the pain behind. But something shifted. What if the pain didn’t need to be left behind at all? What if it too contained its own kind of beauty? And what if I could apply that same question to everything else feeling heavy and uncertain in my life right now?
When life feels unpredictable and overwhelming, our nervous system can only hold so much. Sometimes the most powerful response is self-compassion.
